Robert J. Whitrow received a B.Sc honours degree in Physics from London University in 1967. He received a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Essex in 1972. He worked for the C.E.G.B. before returning to academic life at Brighton Polytechnic in 1974, where he was made a Reader. He is now Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computing at The Nottingham Trent University. He has worked on the machine recognition of handwriting for a number of years, and has been awarded several research grants on this topic. Professor Whitrow is the author of numerous scientific publications and is a Member of the British Computer Society.
